Use this page link in the wiki to access a variety of article from CNN Heroes. These article provide stories of people who are attempting to tear down the "fences" in this world and free people for their situations. When reading these consider how Bruno was in a position to "tear down the fence".


Shared Team Folder Activity

Folder Rubric


You will be in teams of 3 students to develop this collaborative folder.

1. Create a shared document or presentation on Google docs titled: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas 2014 _Names


2. Create the following headings for your sections(you can copy and paste). Good organization of your sections is important.

  • Vocabulary (40+ words from the novel that are new, important or identified by the teacher, provide a definition and page number) You may use vocabulary associated with the events and time period.

  • Character Page (Identify the 4 main characters and identify their character traits by creating a chart provides text evidence for the traits.)


  • Main Events ( Create a short paragraph of 5 to 7 sentences about important story events per chapter and explain how that event or chapter is important. In addition attempt to identify rising and falling action.)

  • Literary Devices (Create a list of 10 or more literary devices with page number and label as to the type of literary device. Can include irony, symbolism, double meanings and foreshadowing.)

  • Retellings as Diary Entries (Write up to 5 short retellings as diary entries or letters from the perspective of the characters that demonstrates your understanding of the situation the characters found themselves in. (150+ words each )


    Title it and write it in the voice of the object or character you want to portray.



  • Quotes to Remember (Develop a collection of 10 quotes that are relevant to the themes and historical context from the novel. Identify the page number and give a reason why that quote is important and relevant to the story.)

  • Major Themes and Ideas (Develop a list of 3 or more major novel themes and ideas with page number references if possible , include a brief paragraph explaining why you selected this them and how they apply to the novel. Define the themes, explain how your character and story support the theme, provide 2 or more references and reflect on the theme in your own life.

  • CHANGES IN THE FORM OF ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS ARE POSSIBLE. Be aware of updates.



Project and Research Extensions


Plan a project idea early in the novel study so that you have plenty of time work on it.

Ideas for Projects

  • Researching a relevant historical topic from the time period of the stories.


    This can be presented as a PP, Windows Movie Maker, Prezi, poster or written research report presented to the class.

  • Write a short historical fiction story from the same time period that could accompany the novel.

  • Write a 5 paragraph essay that uses the symbol of fences from the story and examines fences that are a part of our world today.

  • Write poems with artwork that examines the major themes from the novel.

  • Design a poster and or graphic images that deal with story themes and ideas.


    Creatively work with the images and themes in some graphic way. It should involve artistic skill either manually or digitally.

  • Compare Number the Stars and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (essay, graphically or oral presentation)

  • Dramatically present selections from the novel with your interpretation of the events.

  • Create a 3D display that demonstrates key novel themes, symbols and ideas.
